Next time you are at your local farmers market or natural food grocery store, make sure to stop and check out some of winter’s citrus fruits. December is the perfect month to pick some up because they’re extra juicy and we all could use an extra vitamin C boost to strengthen our immune systems!
Citrus fruits not only have immune boosting vitamins, but they also contain the antioxidants known as flavonoids. Studies indicate that flavonoids may possess the ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, protect the heart to prevent heart disease, as well as improve blood flow through coronary arteries to prevent oxidation of LDL cholesterol.
Here’s a list of citrus fruits you do not want to miss out on this season:
- Blood oranges
- Grapefruit
- Clementines
- Kumquats
- Satsuma oranges
- Mandarins
- Lemons
- Limes
- Pomelos
Throw some of these citrus fruits in your salads, make salad dressings, eat as a whole, make delicious juices, smoothies or throw them into your winter cake or muffin recipes!
